Words of Hope

” Hope Springs Eternal “…

As I sit at the pastor’s desk thinking about “Words of Hope” that might be springing forth for the summer months of June and July, I can’t help but think how quickly spring has changed over to summer. It got me thinking about this past spring and the phrase that kept running through my mind was “Hope Springs Eternal”…

It sounds like something from the pages of God’s word, doesn’t it? One of those half-truths like, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”… And “God doesn’t give us more than we can handle”… Biblical half-truths are those sayings that sound like they come from the pages of Scripture but really don’t…

And so even as scriptural as “Hope Springs Eternal” sounds, the whole truth, (as opposed to the half-truth) is that the phrase was actually coined by Alexander Pope in his poem “An Essay on Man”.

While I agree that it is true that hope does indeed spring eternal, the point that Alexander Pope is trying to make is a little bit different than the eternal nature of hope that springs up from the words of Scripture. For the poet “Hope Springs Eternal” means that people will continue to hope even though they have evidence that things cannot possibly turn out the way they want and they will keep on hoping, no matter what the odds.

The truth of the Scriptures is in the real hope that it reveals… The eternal hope revealed in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus… That is where true hope is revealed… That is the hope that springs up eternally…

Let’s look at Titus 3:4-7, “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.” (emphasis mine)

The hope that the writer is referring to is a hope that is not dependent upon any odds or upon anything that we might or might not do… The true hope that springs eternal is poured out upon us generously through Jesus Christ our Lord as a gift of God’s grace.

The hope that springs eternal springs up in us as we believe in Jesus Christ as the source of our hope. Look what Jesus shares with his friend as she was grieving over the loss of a loved one in John 11:25, “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;”

When we come to trust, to hope, and to place our very lives into the hands of Jesus as our only hope, rivers of living water spring up within us… “Hope Springs Eternal” from within our very soul… This according to the gospel writer John as he shares in chapter 7 verse 38, “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

My prayer for us this summer is that we would grasp the eternal nature of the hope that springs forth from Jesus… My prayer for us always is that we would allow that very same hope to spring from within us and pour forth into a world that can sometimes seem hopeless and so desperately needs the hope that only Jesus can provide…

Hope truly does spring eternal… May it spring forth from you… today and always… in Jesus’ name…

Blessings,

Pastor Wayne
